The 10 Levels Every Retriever Should Master

Every good retriever — Lab, Golden, Chessie, or Boykin — moves through the same ten stages. Skip one and you'll pay for it later. Rush one and you'll rebuild it twice.
Here is the ladder we use inside The Daily Retrieve, and how to know your dog is ready to move up.
1. Puppy foundation Name, come-in whistle, crate calm, basic obedience. No retrieving pressure. Confidence and drive first.
2. Basic obedience under distraction Sit means sit until released. Heel means heel. Here means here. Every hunt-test title, every duck-hunt cleanup, every marshal-your-dog moment is built on this.
3. Simple singles One bumper, one gun station, easy cover. The dog is watching, sitting through the throw, and coming straight back to hand.
4. Long singles and short doubles Distance, then memory. Doubles start close before they get long. The dog learns to pick up birds in order.
5. Pattern blinds The dog runs known lines to known piles. This is where "line the dog and trust it" gets installed.
6. Handling foundations Whistle sit, back cast, over cast — first in the yard, then in the field. Cold blinds are still weeks away.
7. Cold blinds Now the dog runs blinds it does not know. Short before long, land before water.
8. Combination drills Doubles with a blind. Diversions. Honor drills. The scenarios start looking like a hunt test.
9. Water blinds and hunt-test setups Water lines that require holding, terrain that tempts cheating, cover that pulls the dog off line.
10. Finished work Multiple marks, multiple blinds, honor, quiet in the blind, steady through shots and diversions. This is the dog you take duck hunting anywhere.
How to know it's time to move up Two indicators: consistency (the dog does the work correctly three sessions in a row) and calmness (the dog performs it without stress or arousal you can see). If either is missing, spend another week at the current level.
That's the whole ladder. Log the sessions, work the drills in order, and don't skip the boring rungs.
